BOXING & SPORTING HISTORY
From Denbigh Boxing Club to the World of Boxing
About the Collection
Boxing is an important part of the story of the 1950’s Museum and its founder, Sparrow Harrison.
Sparrow leart to box as a young man, and the sport gave him confidence and helped him overcome his stammer. In 1956, Sparrow co-founded Denbigh Amateur Boxing Club, which continues to this day and has played an important part in the local community.
Sparrow has many stories from his years in boxing and particularly enjoys telling visitors about the time he fought J. Cassidy and knocked him out in three rounds.
His friendships and connections with the boxing world are also reflected throughout the collection. Sparrow was a good friend of John H. Stracey, former British and Commonwealth champion, and the collection includes signatures from John H. Stracey and Dai Dower.
There is also a memorable photograph of Sparrow with boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard and members of Denbigh Boxing Club.
